Go solar with Glenfield Electrical

You can now choose your trusted local electrical contractor to install top quality solar panels at your home at great value for money. Here, Phil gives the lowdown on why Glenfield Electrical are now your choice for solar panels in Leicestershire.

Glenfield Electrical are delighted to announce that we’re now installing solar panels and battery storage for homeowners and businesses.

As electrical contractors since 2013, we’ve worked hard to achieve a fantastic reputation as domestic, commercial and industrial electricians. We have been reviewed as ThreeBestRated’s Number 1 electrician in Leicester and have over 200 5* reviews across Google, Which & Checkatrade.

Installing a wide variety of power, lighting, data and EV charging solutions for our customers, we’ve now taken a further step into the renewable energy market to meet existing and future customer demand.

We gained our MCS accreditation (the certification required to install solar in the UK) in 2023 and, uniquely for an electrical contractor of our size, we hired a renewables manager – Nick Holmes.

Nick has a wealth of experience in the solar industry spanning over 15 years and he’s personally installed, designed, tested and commissioned thousands of solar PV systems in that time.

Since February 2023, we’ve been working hard to implement the right processes, systems and procedures so our solar services are up to scratch with our top-notch electrical services.

Five reasons why solar panels are so popular now

1 Soaring bills have made solar panels a better option

To put it simply, energy bills are out of control compared to pre-pandemic times. In 2013, electricity costed homeowners 15 pence per kWh – in 2023 it was 30 pence per kWh. In 10 years, the price per unit has doubled, not to mention standing charges have increased too.

Now in 2024, the average electricity bill is over £1,000 a year, although it’s true that the unit price has fallen slightly since the height of the pandemic. However, it was recently announced that the price cap on electricity is increasing again in October 2024 by 9.6%.

Homeowners are fed up with spending so much on their electricity bills and that’s why 1.4m UK homeowners have already chosen solar panels. In 2010, just 28,000 homeowners had solar panels installed. In 13 years, the number of solar panel installations has increased by a whopping 4,900%.

A Solar Savings Case Study: 3 Bedroom Semi-Detached House Savings

Firstly, it depends very much on the house, the people in it and how they use their energy. But for this example, we’ll take a typical 3 bed semi-detached house with a mostly south facing  roof (southerly roofs get the most sun, east and west roofs are also fine).

We installed this 3.68 kW (8 panel) system with a 5.12 kWh battery for Sue in Leicester.

The new average monthly bill:

A massive 63.93% saving each month.

2 Solar panels are cheaper and more efficient than ever

Over the course of the 2010s, solar panel prices have fallen by around 90% globally as they have increased in popularity. That’s effectively a huge discount for homeowners looking to go solar.

3 Cutting-edge battery storage technology is a game changer for homeowners

Battery storage technology has developed rapidly over the past few years. Not only are the batteries bigger than ever, they’re more affordable. The mass adoption of cheaper and reliable solar batteries means homeowners can store their own excess electricity, boosting their electricity bill savings. To put the crazy speed of the price reductions into context. Solar batteries are primarily lithium-ion similar to Electric Vehicle batteries.

Take the Tesla Model S 75D, which has a 75 kWh battery. In 2018, the battery costed approximately £10,900; in 1991, it would have cost £450,000. That’s 97.58% cheaper!

4 The Smart Export Guarantee (SEG)

The Smart Export Guarantee is a scheme backed by the government meaning homeowners get paid for the energy they export.

Whilst it’s not as lucrative as the old Feed In Tariff which was discontinued in 2019, homeowners can get paid for their excess electricity by an energy supplier (it doesn’t necessarily have to be your own provider). There are rates over 20p per kWh available which means homeowners can earn up to £300 a year in export payments too.

Over 20 years (Most solar panels have 25 year guarantees) the export payments at £300 a year total up to another £6000. Although it’s difficult to say whether SEG payment will remain at the current prices.

5 Doing your bit for the planet

Sue Basset’s solar installation, a typical 3.68 kW system with a 5 kW battery will avoid the equivalent of driving 14,786 miles in a car over the system lifetime.
