Stay Safe with Electricals this Festive Season

Here are our top tips for keeping your family safe around your electrical devices this Christmas. We’ve listed some of our top tips for keeping three common electrical devices safe this season.

Portable heaters

Did you know that portable heaters are responsible for 4% of accidental house fires each year? (Be Safe Direct)

While we’re all about that cosy feeling here at Glenfield Electrical, no one wants to be at risk this winter. Here are our tips to keep your portable heaters safe this winter:

  • Make sure your heater is on a level surface and out of the way so it can’t be knocked over (pets, we’re looking at you…)
  • Never use a portable heater to dry your clothes (we know it can be tempting)
  • Make sure there is an RCD on the socket you are using

Festive Decorations

They make our homes look incredible, but there are a few things we need to do to ensure festive decorations are safe to use.

Here are our top tips to make sure your decorations aren’t a hazard this season:

  • If you have a real Christmas tree, make sure you keep it well watered as dried-out trees are more flammable
  • Keep it well away from heat sources, particularly portable heaters
  • Keep fairy lights organised so our furry friends don’t treat them as a chew toy

Electric blankets

Whilst there’s nothing better than getting into a warm bed, electric blankets can be dangerous if not used properly.

Here are our top tips to keep you safe in bed this season:

  • Examine your blanket regularly for signs of wear or damage
  • Don’t use the blanket when it’s folded as it could overheat and cause a fire
  • Never touch the blanket with wet hands or feet as electricity and water don’t mix well
