Introduction

See how we’ve helped Rushey Mead Academy tackle their Net Zero objectives, reduce their energy bills and emissions by installing 128 super efficient LED lights across their premises whilst minimizing disruption during term time.

The Story of Rushey Mead

Rushey Mead Academy are a school based in central Leicester for students aged 11-16. As a public sector organisation, they’ve been tasked by the Government to reduce their carbon footprint. LED lights use 50% less electricity than fluorescent lights and 85% less than incandescent lights so upgrading their outdoor lighting to LEDs was an obvious step to reducing their energy usage and carbon emissions.

The Challenge

Schools have to apply for capital funding to undertake projects like lighting upgrades, it’s a lengthy process so the facilities managers at  schools & academies like Rushey Mead require contractors with great availability to carry out work exactly when needed. The Department for Education allows academies to set their own thresholds for low and medium sized projects. In Rushey Mead Academy’s case they require 3 quotes for any projects greater than £10,000 in value. Additionally, the project needed to be undertaken during term time which meant challenges surrounding access, disruption and health & safety.

Why Rushey Mead chose Glenfield Electrical

What facilities manager Dale Whiteman said about our services:

“As a school we’ve used a wide range of electricians in the past as we have to tender out work over a certain value. We’ve seen some varying standards of work in the past but Glenfield Electrical were spot on from start to finish.

From getting their quote we were really impressed with the level of detail and the options they offered for the outdoor LED lighting at Rushey Mead Academy.

The warranties, the risk assessment and all the accreditations were comprehensive and the different options they offered on the quote were great. It wasn’t a case of here’s one option and one price.

The quote had a few alternative options for lighting, and they found us some cheaper lights of an equivalent spec of what we were after, but with a better warranty which we took up.

Over the few weeks the Glenfield lads were here they turned up exactly when we asked, on time and did exactly what we needed without a problem.

The best thing I can say is it’s like we they weren’t even here apart from when Rhys nipped in for a coffee.

There wasn’t a single complaint from the students or staff – not even a murmur.  They minimised the disruption even though they were using a hammer action drill by only using it at certain times fitting around the school day.

The ease and flexibility from start to finish was great, from site visit, to getting the quote, the risk assessment, to the guys getting on sight to the finished product was excellent. I have already recommended Glenfield Electrical and will continue to do so in the future.”

The figures

We replaced 128 external lights at Rushey Mead’s site reducing their energy use and their energy bill. Here are the estimated results (2021 figures):

Monthly saving – £474

Annual saving – £5,688

5 year saving – £28,440

Rushey Mead are also benefitting from the other advantages of LEDs. They’re cheaper to maintain as they have a longer lifespan than incandescent & fluorescent lighting meaning the units are replaced less often. Typically, LEDs are brighter than their traditional counterparts helping increase the visibility and security of the site too.
