Introduction: Vichai Memorial Garden Electrics

The memorial garden at Leicester City’s King Power Stadium commemorates those who lost their lives in the tragic events in October 2018.

Leicester City owner and chairman Vichai Srivaddhanaprabha, Kaveporn Punpare, Nusara Suknamai, Eric Swaffer and Izabela Lechowicz tragically died after a mechanical fault caused their helicopter to crash in a stadium carpark.

To honour Vichai and his legacy, the football club approached The Garden Design Company to build the memorial garden in 2019, as the first year anniversary of the crash approached. We assisted the build by providing the power and lighting.

The Story of Vichai Memorial Garden Build

Flowers left in tribute to Vichai were composted and helped form the basis of the garden itself. Chief Executive Susan Whelan said, “From the scene of a tragedy, we aim to build something peaceful, something poignant and something beautiful, where supporters of today and of future generations can remember what one man’s vision did for this club, this community.”

The Challenge

The project had a tight deadline as it had to be completed within 3 weeks before the opening on the crash anniversary. Our team had to work tirelessly around other trades to make sure the power and lighting were immaculate.

Additionally, heavy rain made the garden project all the more difficult and our team had to work the TGDC to trench and lay the cables carefully.

Our responsibilities for the garden project encompassed:

  • Providing and installing a GPR Metal enclosure to house the fuse board and time clock
  • Supplying a 10-way 18th Edition consumer unit
  • Installing 30 JCC Black 15W Round Bollard Lights to illuminate the pathways
  • Incorporating 31 GU10 Spike Lights with GU10 LED Lamps to accentuate key features
  • Fitting 12 LED Wall Lights to enhance the ambiance
  • Supplying electrical provisions to water features, ensuring seamless integration with the garden’s design
  • Installing 60 underground Weatherproof Commercial Pratley joint boxes for secure connections
  • Supplying and terminating 300m x 1.5mm 3-core SWA cable to power the lighting fixtures

The Results

Glenfield Electrical’s involvement in the memorial garden project was pivotal in having the garden ready on time for the opening. Now the memorial garden is a wonderfully tranquil place for reflection set amongst the grounds of the stadium.
